Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luís has reflected on the tactical lessons that shaped his football philosophy, highlighting a humbling encounter with Pep Guardiola as a turning point.

Speaking to Universo Valdano, the Brazilian described how facing Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in the Champions League while at Atletico Madrid reshaped his understanding of space, control and tactical detail.

Known as one of his generation’s most intelligent players, Luís said the dominance of Guardiola’s side left a lasting mark on him as a student of the game.

Now preparing for a long-term future in management, he is drawing on those elite influences. His reflections come shortly after leaving Flamengo, despite winning the Copa Libertadores and ending with an emphatic 8–0 victory.

"The biggest thrashing I've been given in my career was Guardiola's Bayern. I was convinced he had cheated with the size of the pitch because everything felt so far away; we never reached the goal and it seemed like he had more players on the field. I said to myself: I have to learn this."
