The United star also beat Arsenal’s Declan Rice to the Football Writers Player of the Year award after his league-leading 19 assists this season.

Despite his personal success, Fernandes is yet to pick up much silverware with the Red Devils in what has been one of the worst spells in the club’s history.

Speaking after being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, he admits he wants to reach the heights of two clubs legends who found great success with the club.

"I want to achieve everything that those players achieved in terms of winning with the club. But being in their company with this award is massively important for me and I won’t hide from that. It will always be the prize for me.

“That’s always what my goal has been. I’ve never hidden from that. As I said before, I’m not very good at hiding things! I speak out whenever I want on what I want to achieve and what I want to achieve is winning the league and winning the Champions League."

Fernandes has won the FA Cup and EFL Cup with United and will seek to lift silverware once more as the club compete in the Champions League and form a squad in the summer worthy of the title.
