Fermín Lopez was rushed to hospital for emergency stitches after suffering a serious lip injury during UEFA Champions League elimination against Atlético Madrid.

The Barcelona midfielder sustained the cut following a collision with goalkeeper Juan Musso while attempting a header, an incident that has sparked debate despite Musso’s explanation.

After returning to Catalonia, Lopez required further treatment as initial dressing-room care proved insufficient.

The 22-year-old had played 68 minutes, covering eight kilometres and missing a clear chance before being substituted for Marcus Rashford.

Although Barcelona won 2-1 on the night, they were eliminated 3-2 on aggregate. He now faces a short recovery period to prevent infection after an already bruising week that included another facial cut.
