Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored a dramatic 92nd-minute header to secure a 3-2 victory for his side, which sent the Anfield crowd into frenzy. During the drama, however, Simeone clashed with the crowd and was shown a red card.
Television cameras captured the 55-year-old gesturing angrily toward the crowd whilst Atletico’s club nutritionist, David Lagos, spat at home supporters. Now, as confirmed by NY Times journalist James Pearce, he has been charged by UEFA.
“Diego Simeone charged with unsporting conduct by UEFA following his red card at Anfield last week.
“#LFC charged with throwing of objects by their fans.
“UEFA still looking into allegations that Atletico nutritionist David Lagos spat towards home fans.”
Liverpool have also been charged by European football’s governing body over their fans throwing objects during their 3-2 victory which sums up one of the most hectic and chaotic matches so far this season.
Atletico host Bundesliga team Eintracht Frankfurt in their second league phase game of the Champions League whilst Liverpool face Galatasaray next week as they aim to continue their perfect form.
