The former Liverpool star faced his first return to Anfield following his controversial £10M move to Real Madrid over the summer, which infuriated fans who made their feelings known as they defaced his mural before the game.
That anger was made crystal clear tonight when boos rained down on the right-back upon his return to Merseyside on Tuesday night, which sparked debate online as to whether it was fair to do so.
"I wasn't surprised, and I don't think Trent would have been surprised if I'm being totally honest," Carragher said on CBS Sports. "There is obviously a lot of strong feeling in the city around him moving.
"I was a local boy playing for Liverpool and living in Liverpool, and in the city, we live and breathe football every single day. Even though I'm not a player anymore, all we talk about is Liverpool.
"So when one of your own moves on and makes a decision that 99 per cent of the supporters think 'I wouldn't do that', a local player for Liverpool has to embody those supporters.
"I know what Trent is going through and the difficulties that you can have. But leaving Liverpool isn't easy.”
Carragher understands fan frustration
Trent played 354 times for the Reds after breaking through into first-team under former boss Jurgen Klopp who helped him win several trophies including the Champions League. Carragher continued and said he understands boos as fans have the right to be unhappy.
"Now, okay, it's his career, he gets one career, he's a young man, he's been brilliantly successful at the club. But what he's said since he's got in the team, if that were to be true, and Liverpool is the only team for him and he wants to be their captain, he wants to be a legend here.
"You don't leave when you've just won the league title and you've got the opportunity to go win more trophies with your club."
"And then you join a club who's beat you twice in a Champions League final and they're the club you want to compete for to maybe win more Champions League final.
"So, I totally understand the reaction of the supporters. And a lot of it is because they feel like they have been hoodwinked a little bit by Trent throughout the process of him being at the club."
