The Portuguese coach was sacked by Manchester United in January after 14 months in charge, having replaced Erik ten Hag in November 2024.
Amorim failed at United and his replacement Michael Carrick has since thrived with the Red Devils, leading them back to the Champions League in what looked an impossible task under the former Sporting boss.
Now, according to The Sun, the Benfica see Amorim as the leading candidate to take charge when Mourinho makes his way back to Real Madrid in the coming months.
Amorim initially made his name as a coach in Portugal with Sporting , where he won two Portuguese titles before making his move to the Premier League.
The 41 year old played at Benfica and retired there in 2017, so he certainly knows the club alongside the league where he was clearly comfortably before.
Mourinho, after completing an unbeaten league season with Benfica, finished third and is keen on making a move to the Spanish capital, with a deal reportedly already agreed between him and the club.
Amorim has kept a low profile since his United departure and may have been weighing up every option before the new season as Benfica make a move for him in the coming months.
