Alexander-Arnold’s Champions League debut for Real Madrid lasted just three minutes after he was forced off with a hamstring injury on Tuesday night in what is a devastating blow for both him and manager Xabi Alonso who also saw Dani Carvajal sent off.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the England international has picked up a serious injury which could leave him on the sidelines for months to come.
“Official: Trent Alexander-Arnold has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the femoral biceps of his left leg.”
It is the second time in a matter of weeks that Alexander-Arnold has picked up a muscle complaint, having missed Madrid's Club World Cup exit to Paris Saint-Germain in July. His injury could also mean he misses a return to Anfield in just 6 weeks time, something he may have hoped to avoid in the first place.
He now faces a race against time to make fitness for that clash, depending on the severity of the injury. If he does make it back to full fitness before then however, he will not receive a warm welcome from the Anfield crowd after he left the side on the worst of terms during the summer transfer window.
