Liverpool remain in talks with Egypt over when winger Mohamed Salah will be called up for the Africa Cup of Nations.

With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations kicking off in Morocco on December 21st, the Premier League champions are expected to lose the Egyptian king for an extended period during a hectic football calendar.

Salah could be called up early?

Salah is guaranteed to miss clashes with Brighton & Hove Albion, Tottenham, Wolves, Leeds United and Fulham. However, if Egypt progress as expected from their group, this could extend to 7-8 matches, including crucial fixtures against league leaders Arsenal.

Now, the situation has gotten even worse for Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who could lose Salah earlier than expected as talks commence.

"We are still in contact with Liverpool and Manchester City at the moment for this matter," Ibrahim Hassan, the director of the Egypt team, said as he spoke on when Salah could be called up to the side.

The Mirror report that relations between Anfield chiefs and Egypt remain positive, with talks progressing towards an agreement before a crucial period for both parties next month.

A group stage exit for Egypt could mean Salah is back in time for the visit from Leeds United on New Year's Day, but this is highly unlikely for The Pharaohs who are one of the favourites for the competition.

Salah will be rested

However, Salah won't play for Egypt against Cape Verde on Monday afternoon, though as the 33 year old is being rested in what is welcome news for Liverpool. Egypt confirmed the decision in a statement this week:

"The Egyptian national football team, led by Hossam Hassan, held its training session in Al Ain in preparation for a friendly match against Cape Verde at 6pm on Monday - Cairo time - at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain, UAE.

“The absence of the duo Ahmed Sayed Zizo and Hamdi Fathi from the Cape Verde match due to injury was also confirmed, and Salah Mohsen underwent recovery training, in addition to giving Mohamed Salah a rest, and his non-participation in the Cape Verde friendly.

“Tarek Abou El-Enein and Mohamed Abou Hussein, members of the board of directors of the Football Association, attended the training session of the Egyptian national team.”
