Liverpool and Tottenham are leading the race for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

A pillar of consistency in Fabian Hurzeler's back line, Van Hecke has become one of the Premier League's most sought-after centre-backs, combining elite ball-playing talents with monstrous physical attributes.

The 25-year-old has even chipped in with six goal involvements in 35 top-flight appearances this term, putting the Seagulls on the brink of European qualification.

Of course, beating Manchester United in their final game will confirm Brighton's return to Europe for next season, but beyond that, they will have a fight on their hands to keep Van Hecke.

According to Sky Sports, interest in the Dutchman is "anticipated", and Brighton are already planning for his eventual exit, with the club working on a move for Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell

Hurzeler tried to sign the Englishman in January and will now pursue a transfer for the 23-year-old, who has produced immense performances in Ligue 1 this term.

Cresswell has scored three times in 29 league appearances, while establishing himself as one of the division's most promising talents and Brighton see him as an ideal replacement for Van Hecke, should he leave.
